About the KPI library
The FinOps Foundation’s KPI library is the closest thing the practice has to a shared vocabulary of measures: 88 KPIs across the Framework’s capabilities, each with a definition and a formula. It publishes no calculator, and its formulas run their data sources and examples into one block of text.
Here each KPI has its own page with the formula set out, a calculator where the formula is arithmetic, and for the most-used ones, where the inputs come from in a FOCUS export and the mistake that usually skews the result.
Source: FinOps KPIs, FinOps Foundation, licensed CC BY 4.0, read 16 Oct 2026. Changes: HTML removed, dashes and British spellings changed to this site’s style, and each formula split from its data sources and examples.
Questions
Where do these KPIs come from?
From the FinOps Foundation’s KPI library, a community-curated collection published under CC BY 4.0. Each page carries the Foundation’s definition and formula and links back to its page in the library. The calculators and the notes on how to measure each one are ours.
Which FinOps KPIs should we start with?
The ones that point at a decision you can make this quarter. For most teams that is the share of cost nobody owns (untagged or unallocated), commitment coverage and the effective savings rate, and budget against actual. Unit costs come next, once allocation is good enough to divide by.
Which KPIs can be computed from a billing file?
Seven: effective savings rate, commitment coverage, commitment waste, commitment utilization, untagged cost, tagging policy compliance and the daily burn rate. Every other KPI needs a number the bill does not hold, such as revenue, a budget, a forecast or a count of users, so its page has a calculator instead.
Why does a calculator sometimes differ from the published formula?
A few published formulas compute something other than what the KPI’s name and definition describe; the commitment coverage KPI, for example, is published as a discount ratio. Where that happens the calculator follows the name and the page says so, quoting the published formula.
Are there benchmarks for these KPIs?
Only where the Foundation publishes them, such as the anomaly cost bands for AI spend, and the page says when it shows one. A benchmark without a named source is a guess, so none is invented here.
