Commitment Coverage Checker
See how much of your eligible usage commitments cover, how much you are not using, and which ones expire next.
Before you start: what to have readyShow
- A billing export covering a month or more: an AWS Cost and Usage Report with the Savings Plan and reservation columns, or a FOCUS export from any cloud.
- Amortized figures are read from the file, so there is nothing to set. Purchases are counted, never added twice.
- For contract end dates from FOCUS, the Contract Commitment dataset as a second file.
Or drop files here: an AWS Cost and Usage Report (CUR 2.0 or legacy), or a FOCUS export from AWS, Azure, Google Cloud or any other provider. Add a FOCUS contract commitment file to put contract end dates on the calendar. A whole month or more gives the fairest figures.
Your files are read in this browser tab and never sent anywhere.

About this checker
Commitments are the largest single lever on most cloud bills and the easiest one to let drift. A Savings Plan bought for last year’s fleet covers less of this year’s, a reservation outlives the database it was bought for, and the renewal date arrives with nobody watching it.
This reads the commitment detail your bill already carries and reports the four numbers a commitment review starts from (coverage, utilization, unused commitment and effective savings rate), with the dates everything ends. The formulas follow the FinOps Foundation’s FOCUS use cases, and the page says where and why they differ.
Questions
What is the difference between coverage and utilization?
Coverage asks how much of the usage that could run under a commitment actually did. Utilization asks how much of what you committed to was used. They pull in opposite directions: buying more raises coverage and risks utilization, buying less does the reverse. Low coverage means paying on-demand prices you did not have to; low utilization means paying for capacity nobody ran.
What is the effective savings rate?
One number for how well the commitment portfolio is working: what eligible usage would have cost at on-demand prices, minus what it and any unused commitment actually cost, as a share of the on-demand price. It rewards buying the right amount, because unused commitment comes straight off the savings. The FinOps Foundation publishes it as a FOCUS use case; the page shows the formula and where this one differs.
Which files does it read?
An AWS Cost and Usage Report, CUR 2.0 from Data Exports or the legacy report, with the Savings Plan and reservation columns. Or a FOCUS export from any provider: AWS, Azure and Google Cloud all produce one. A FOCUS 1.4 export with CommitmentProgramEligibilityDetails gives the most exact coverage. Add the FOCUS Contract Commitment dataset to put contract end dates on the calendar. CSV or gzipped CSV.
Where do the end dates come from?
An AWS report carries the end of every Savings Plan and Reserved Instance on its lines, so the calendar fills itself. FOCUS cost and usage rows carry no end dates; FOCUS keeps them in the separate Contract Commitment dataset (FOCUS 1.3 and later), which you can load beside it. The calendar file adds an event on each end date with a reminder 30 days before.
How much should I commit to?
Enough to cover the usage you run every hour, and no more. The target panel shows the eligible usage per hour you would need to bring under a commitment to reach a coverage you choose, and what that roughly costs at the discount your current commitments get. It is an average over the file; check the hourly minimum before you buy, because usage above that minimum is what turns into unused commitment.
Is my billing file uploaded anywhere?
No. The files are read by your browser and analyzed in the tab; nothing in them is sent. Usage statistics record that a file was loaded, its detected type and a size band, never its name or contents. The /privacy page lists every field.
