Architecture Placement Comparator

What this free tool does for you

Choose between two designs with their running cost in front of you. See which placement pays less for data transfer, path by path, before anything is built.

How to use it

  1. Pick a scenario under Start from a scenario, or describe your own.
  2. Enter Placement A: its cloud, continent and monthly traffic by path.
  3. Press Make B the same as A, then change only what differs in Placement B.
  4. Set Traffic growth a year for the three-year view.
  5. Read By traffic path, a month to see where the difference comes from.

Good to know

  • Move traffic, do not delete it. Co-locating turns cross-region traffic into same-zone traffic. Keep the totals equal.
  • Cheaper is not always safer. Less replication costs less. Check it still meets your recovery targets.
  • Save or share. Use Copy link to this result, under the answer, to get a link with your numbers filled in.
Start from a scenario

Each one fills in the fields below for a typical workload of that kind. You can change any of them.

Monthly traffic, in TB, by where it goes, for each placement.

Projection

B against A, a month-$600.00
Placement A

Placement B

Over three years
-$26,208.00

Network list prices; negative means B costs less.

Difference over three years
-$26,208.00
Placement B costs $600.00 a month less, with 20% growth a year.

Placement B
$131,248.80
AWS, 101 TB a month

What this means

  • Placement B costs less to run

$600.00 a month less than Placement A, $7,200.00 a year and $26,208.00 over three years with the growth you set.

  • Most of the difference is another region, same continent

    $600.00 a month in A against $0.00 in B, 100% of the gap.

What this model assumes

Show
  • Each placement is priced on its own cloud and continent, with the same rates and rules as the Cloud Egress Cost Calculator: internet tiers shared by every internet-bound path, cross-zone charged the way each cloud charges it.
  • Move traffic, do not delete it. A placement change usually turns one kind of traffic into another, cross-region into same-zone for example. The page warns when the two totals differ.
  • Growth reprices each year on both sides, so larger volumes fall into cheaper internet tiers.
  • Not counted: compute, storage and licenses that a placement also changes, private connection ports, NAT and load balancer processing, CDN requests, and negotiated discounts.

Questions

Does region placement change the data transfer bill?

Often more than anything else. Traffic inside a zone is free, across zones it is a cent or two a GB on AWS and Google Cloud, between regions $0.02, and between North America and Europe up to $0.05. An application reading its storage from another region pays that on every byte, every month.

Is a multi-region architecture more expensive?

In data transfer, yes: replication and cross-region reads are billed by the GB. That can be the right trade for availability. This page shows what it costs, so the choice is made with the number.

Can I compare the same architecture on two clouds?

Yes. Set each placement to a different cloud with the same traffic. Remember that network is one line of the bill; compute, storage and discounts usually decide the choice of cloud.

Where do I get the traffic numbers?

From your bill, if the system already runs: data transfer lines grouped by usage type. For a new design, estimate the bytes each component sends to each other one, and start from a scenario.
