GKE Cluster Management Fee
A fixed hourly fee for each GKE cluster's control plane, charged regardless of how many nodes it has or whether anything is running on it. Node costs appear separately as Compute Engine SKUs, so an empty cluster is not a free cluster.
Billed: A flat hourly charge per cluster for the managed control plane, independent of cluster size. One zonal cluster per billing account is free.
What triggers this charge
- Every cluster that exists, billed hourly from creation to deletion.
- Per-cluster rather than per-node, which makes many small clusters much more expensive than one shared one.
- Development and preview clusters left running after the work finished.
How to reduce it
Consolidate small clusters
Namespaces with resource quotas and network policies give most teams the isolation they actually need, at one control-plane fee instead of eight.
Delete ephemeral clusters automatically
Preview-environment clusters should have a lifetime. A scheduled cleanup job costs nothing and removes a recurring charge.
Remember the node bill is separate
The management fee is often the smaller half. Node right-sizing and Spot node pools usually matter more.
