Cloud Egress Cost Calculator

What this free tool does for you

Know what the new architecture will cost to run on the network before it is built. See the monthly bill by traffic path, and the changes worth most.

How to use it

  1. Pick the Cloud and Where the workload runs, or start from a scenario.
  2. Enter monthly traffic Inside the cloud: zones, regions and backup.
  3. Enter what goes Leaving the cloud: your data center, the internet, the CDN and other clouds.
  4. Set Traffic growth a year for the three-year view.
  5. Read The changes worth most, then The same traffic on each cloud.

Good to know

  • Private connection? Turn Over a private connection off to see what one would save on data-center traffic.
  • Already in the cloud? Your bill's data transfer lines, grouped by usage type, give these numbers.
  • Save or share. Use Copy link to this result, under the answer, to get a link with your numbers filled in.

The changes worth most

  1. 1
Serve users through Amazon CloudFront: up to $228.04/mo

The same 30 TB costs $2,364.16 a month at CDN rates, before cache-fill and request charges.

  2. 2
Keep chatty services in one zone: up to $160.00/mo

Zone-aware routing and placing each service beside its database removes cross-zone traffic; keep a standby in another zone for failover only.

  3. 3
Run the application in the region its data is in: up to $100.00/mo

Cross-region reads and writes between an application and its storage are the most common avoidable transfer line after a migration.

What this model assumes

Show
  • Internet tiers are shared. Users, other clouds, and the data center when it has no private link are priced on one monthly tier ladder, after the free allowance (100 GB on AWS and Azure, 1 GiB on Google Premium Tier), and each path takes its share.
  • Cross-zone differs by cloud. AWS charges $0.01 a GB to the sender and again to the receiver; Google charges $0.01 a GiB once; Azure stopped charging in May 2024.
  • Units are the provider’s. Your TB are decimal; AWS and Azure bill per GB and Google per GiB, which is 7.4% larger, so the same traffic is fewer billed units on Google.
  • Google is Premium Tier, to users on the same continent. Standard Tier is cheaper and slower; destinations in Asia, Oceania and South America cost more.
  • Not counted: private connection ports and carriers, NAT gateway and load balancer processing, CDN requests and cache fill, and negotiated discounts. The NAT gateway calculator prices the first of those on AWS.
  • Growth reprices each year, so a larger volume falls into cheaper tiers rather than scaling the bill in proportion.

Questions

How much does cloud egress cost?

It depends on where the data goes. Inside a zone it is free; across zones it is $0.01 to $0.02 a GB on AWS and Google and free on Azure; between regions $0.02 to $0.05; and to the internet $0.05 to $0.12 a GB, falling with volume. A blended rate hides which path you are paying for.

Is data transfer between availability zones free?

On Azure, yes, since May 2024. On AWS it is $0.01 a GB charged to the sender and $0.01 to the receiver, so $0.02 for each GB that crosses. On Google Cloud it is $0.01 a GiB, charged once.

Is a private connection cheaper than internet egress?

Per GB, much: Direct Connect and Interconnect carry data out for $0.02 a GB or GiB and ExpressRoute for $0.025, against $0.09 or more to the internet. The port and the carrier circuit cost a fixed amount a month. Turn the private connection off on this page to see what it would save on your traffic.

Does a CDN reduce egress costs?

Usually for user-facing traffic. CloudFront, Cloud CDN and Front Door start at $0.0825 to $0.085 a GB and fall faster with volume than internet egress, and data from the origin into the CDN is free or cheaper. Requests are billed too, which this page does not price.

What does traffic to another cloud cost?

The sending cloud bills it as internet egress, so it shares the internet tiers. Analytics in one cloud reading data in another is one of the most expensive patterns a migration can leave behind.
