Cloud Carbon per Dollar

What this free tool does for you

See how much carbon each dollar of your cloud bill buys, the FinOps Foundation KPI, and which services carry more carbon than their cost suggests.

How to use it

  1. Open How to get your data and export the carbon report and the bill from each cloud, for the same months.
  2. Drop the carbon files under 1. Carbon exports and the bills under 2. Billing exports, or click Load a worked example.
  3. Choose Location-based or Market-based.
  4. Read the headline grams per dollar, then By cloud, the services and Month by month.

Good to know

  • Above 1. A service whose carbon share is larger than its spend share is where a region move or cutting idle capacity pays off most.
  • Same months. Only months in both files count; the rest are listed, not guessed.
Before you start: what to have readyShow
  • The carbon export from each cloud, and the bill for the same months.
  • The same months in both. Months only one file covers are left out and listed.
1. Carbon exports

AWS CARBON_EMISSIONS, the Google query, Azure or Oracle CSV.

2. Billing exports

AWS CUR, Google billing export (flattened) or FOCUS, for the same months.

Questions

What is carbon per dollar of cloud spend?

The emissions your cloud use caused, divided by what you paid for it: grams of CO2e per dollar. It is one of the FinOps Foundation’s sustainability KPIs, Carbon per Unit of Cloud Spend. A falling figure means each dollar buys cleaner computing; a rising one, that the work moved to dirtier grids or more carbon-heavy services.

Which months does it count?

Only the months that appear in both files for the same cloud. A year of carbon against one month of bill would give a meaningless ratio, so the page counts the overlap and lists the months it left out.

What does "carbon share over spend share" mean?

A service’s share of your emissions divided by its share of your bill. Above 1, the service carries more carbon than its cost suggests: compute in a coal-heavy region is the usual example. Those are the places where a region move or cutting idle capacity reduces carbon fastest for the money.

Why can a service be missing from the service table?

The carbon export and the bill must name the service the same way. AWS uses the same product codes in both (AmazonEC2, AmazonS3), and Google the same service names, so most match. Any that do not are listed under the table.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The files are read by JavaScript in this browser and never sent anywhere, unless you choose "Share for a review" under the results, which saves the files you loaded for Finitizer to look at, under a reference you can quote.

One ratio a month is a trend. Finitizer shows what moves it.

Finitizer puts carbon beside cost for every resource you run, so the regions, services and idle capacity behind the ratio show up in one list, ranked by what changing them would save.
